ERGONOMICS

The study of people's efficiency in their working environment.

Definition

From the Greek word ergon meaning work, and nomoi meaning natural laws, ergonomics is the science of refining the design of products to optimize them for human use. Human characteristics such as height, weight and proportions are considered, as well as information about human hearing, sight, temperature preferences, and so on.

Computers and related products, such as computer desks and chairs, are frequently the focus of ergonomic design. A great number of people use these products for extended periods of time e.g. during the typical work day. If these products are poorly designed or improperly adjusted, the person using them may suffer unnecessary fatigue, stress and even injury.

Workplace injuries in Australia are estimated to cost more than $60 billion per year – but it is more likely that the total is well beyond that figure when you factor in the cost of medical and legal expenses.

Advice to help prevent workplace injuries:

Avoid remaining in the same position for prolonged periods of time by taking frequent rest breaks. If possible, include a variety of work activities, and limit the time you spend that keeps your posture in the same position, such as the continuous use of a computer keyboard.

Ensure the furniture and equipment in your office is arranged and adjusted properly to give maximum

ergonomic access and comfort.

These two approaches should be considered together because of the interaction between them. The less ideal the ergonomics of a workstation, the greater the need for rest breaks. This is where ergonomic improvements can have a beneficial effect on productivity.

Because people have different body sizes and come from different ethnic groups, everyone needs to have their work area and task chair adjusted to their own specific body type and size.
